Installing Windows apps on Linux is about to get easier with Winepak
Jack Wallen explains how installing Windows applications will soon no longer be a barrier to entry, thanks to Winepak.
If you’ve always wanted to switch to Linux, but the thought of leaving Windows apps behind always seemed like a stumbling block, you might be familiar with Wine. Wine is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on Linux and other POSIX-compliant operating systems. However, for many users, Wine itself has been a bit of a hindrance, as it’s not always considered the most user-friendly tool. That’s about to change.
How? ‘Or’ What? Have you ever heard of Flatpak? Otherwise, Flatpak provides a sandbox environment where users can run applications independently from the rest of the system. These apps are containerized, so you don’t have to worry about dependencies. You install the container and it runs. As simple as that.

Well guess what? Winepak allows you to create containerized Windows applications that can be installed on Linux. Imagine, if you will, that you could install a Windows application on Linux with a single command. That’s right. Say, for example, you want to install Notepad++. With Winepak installed, it would suffice to run the command sudo Flatpak install winepak org.notepad_plus_plus.Notepad-plus-plus.
The installation will take some time, as it has to download a fully containerized Wine application, but once it’s done, Notepadd++ is ready to go. Of course, you need to install Flatpak on your system first, then add the necessary repositories and install Winepak.
With that out of the way, you can install any Windows application found in the Winepak repository. Admittedly, there isn’t much at the moment, but expect many new apps to make their way to the list soon. I will also create a step-by-step procedure for getting Winepak working on Ubuntu, so look it up. Until then, prepare for Linux to become an even more viable solution for your desktop.
